Monroe
Express Make-up & Hair Studio
RETAIL DESIGN & interior architecture
THE CHALLENGE: Create the interior architecture and design for Monroe - a new business model on the Romanian market. The studio comes up with quality express beauty services combined with a relaxing lounge where the target audience (business women / socialites) can spend quality time, socialise and enjoy a fancy cocktail.
THE CONTEXT: The studio is structured in three types of services: express beauty styling - done in 20-30 min, for women who don't have enough time to spend in a beauty studio; lounge beauty services - targeting socialite women who can and want to spend quality time among friends in a beauty studio; weekend bridal showers. Therefore, the idea of the studio had to combine all three types of experiences the clients could have inside in a complementary way.
THE CONCEPT: For the contemporary woman, Marilyn Monroe is the model of natural beauty, but at the same time she represents the universally admired diva. So I decided to use this archetype of modern beauty, around which to build the interior design concept.
Four key words were chosen: LUXURIOUS, EXTRAVAGANT, ROMANTIC and POP.
I have combined elements influenced by pop art, with many references to Andy Warhol’s exuberant color palette.
The design is thought of as a way to convey the feeling that you find yourself in a very comfortable space, but also full of life, with a lot of positive energy. Therefore I’ve chosen different styles, from pop to rococo, with neo-kitsch accents.
Each room has its own aesthetic theme.
The lounge is designed as an intimate space with colourful furniture and floral light pendants by Tord Boontje. I wanted to create a luxurious and eccentric environment that gives you a romantic and exuberant feeling, but that also makes you feel sexy and relaxed. Here you are invited to spend quality time with friends, to drink an espresso or a cocktail, or organise a party.
The make-up room is an extension of the lounge. The open space (lounge + make-up) is partitioned by a mobile screen made of white silk tubes that give versatility to the entire room. Therefore the concept used for the lounge continues to the make-up room. I used the same type of luxurious furniture - very comfortable, colourful, with playful accessories that entertain you.
The hair styling room is a mix of contemporary and classic, with references to the works of Damien Hirst. I continued the idea of the light fixtures from the make-up room, using the same kind of cage chandeliers painted this time in pink .
The restroom continues the leitmotif of the entire space. The wallpaper on the front wall reproduces the tile patterns in a very vivid color palette. Also near this wall, I placed a mirror with a sticker displaying a naked man (in real size), with a toilet paper roll between his legs, which obviously MONROE clients can use.
